Book started out great! Mostly Mabel was portrayed as a 'strong indepedent woman' till Max arrived & then she turned into a bit of an idiot! Really struggled to bother finishing book after that.Product details

Nice story. As a Texan I had problems with some of the wording. We say "cattle ranching" instead of "cattle farming." We say "A Texas welcome" instead of "A Texan welcome". Also, the cowboys, wranglers, cowhands are not called a team. Aside from these little annoyances, I enjoyed the book. I liked Jesse, but got aggravated by Mabel. She was so easily mislead by Max.
Mabel is a born and bred, bona fide cowgirl who assumes the running of the ranch when her parents pass away. She’s one of the best in the whole region & has no interest in romance or getting into a relationship, valuing her independence above all.
When a handsome newcomer Jesse Lockwood moves in to be her neighbour, things start to get complicated for Mabel. In makes sense for them to pool their resources for the benefit of both their ranches but Mabel finds herself constantly aggravated by his teasing and behaviour. When a rich city slicker, Max Harper, buys over a floundering ranch in the area, Mabel finds herself in yet another relationship.
I found it obvious that Jesse cared a lot for Mabel & his actions thru out the story showed it. Mabel doesn’t seem to have a clue when it comes to relationships with men. When Max shows up, she seems too ready to believe everything (bad) Max says about Jesse while not trusting anything Jesse says.
While the story is supposed to be an Historical Western Romance, it’s very light on romance but provides quite an interesting story of what life in the west, & cattle ranching was like & what the ranchers faced when the industry went downhill.

Mabel Milton is rancher born and bred. Mabel only wants to marry for love or not at all. Mabel's friend Nora can't seem to understand what that means and continues to play matchmaker. Mabel is gearing up for cattle drive doesn't have time to wonder what to do next. As the days of cattle drive approaches Mabel's neighbor Jesse Lockwood ask if he can partner up with Mabel. I really enjoyed this book. This new to me author showcased writing ability interspersed with interesting tidbits. The characters were honest, flawed, intriguing, compelling, real, and raw. The story hits on the spirit of wild west and incredibly complex as well.
Three and a half stars.
There are five novellas in this series that can each be bought individually, but I'd recommend buying this version which already comes with all five books. It's probably cheaper this way.
Mabel Milton loves nothing more in the world than her cattle ranch. Even finding a husband that she truly loves is second on her list. Nothing will separate Mabel from the ranch she loves, despite Mother Nature's best attempts. So when times get tough, Mabel is forced to become business partners with neighboring cattle rancher Jesse Lockwood. And as infuriating as he can be, Mabel knows he is a good cattle rancher and a good man. But when rich and charming Max Harper also buys a nearby ranch, Mabel wonders if she truly can find true love with him. Is Max Harper the one? Or is he hiding something? And is there more to Jesse Lockwood than meets the eye?
This was a pretty good series, with lots of historical details. Sometimes I felt like the details bogged the story down a bit though. I liked Mabel and Jesse's characters.
However, I definitely liked the author's other series (The Fortune Out Wesr Series) better. So if you're trying to decide between the two, I would go with that one.
But overall, also a good series that I would recommend.
