On a fall morning in the Pacific Northwest, in a coffee shop with four police officers as customers, a burst of gunfire announced a shocking ambush that devastated the Puget Sound and swept up everyone from judges in Tacoma to prison officials in Arkansas to candidates for president of the United States. The story of that morning's violence spans the decades and ripples across state lines. It is a story of our nation's racial divide; of southern prison farms and an act of grace; of festering hate and missed opportunities to stop a man going mad. For its coverage of the shootings and the manhunt that followed, the Seattle Times won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news. Now the newspaper's staff goes deeper, telling the story of a charismatic felon, a minister with his eyes on the White House, and what can lie on the other side of mercy.

So often, when someone does something shocking, people want to know What was he thinking? What was Timothy McVeigh thinking? What about those kids at Columbine? In western Washington, in the fall of 2009, Maurice Clemmons planned to do something shocking. And he left no doubt what he was thinking. The Other Side of Mercy draws upon a stunning trove of records-including a hundred-plus hours of Clemmons' recorded telephone conversations-to describe in remarkable detail Clemmons' past and the steps he took along the way to committing one of the worst crimes in the modern history of the Pacific Northwest.

The Other Side of Mercy recounts Clemmons' childhood in a small Arkansas town that had descended into chaos and economic ruin. Racial hostilities were such that sniper bullets flew and buildings were firebombed. Clemmons turned to burglary and robbery, and, at the age of seventeen, was shipped off to a prison farm system so notorious that it was memorialized in the movie Brubaker. Drawing upon a prison file eighteen-hundred pages thick, The Other Side of Mercy takes readers inside the prison barracks and into the fields, as Clemmons racks up enemies, extorting other inmates and waging fights with makeshift weapons.

Clemmons makes a plea for mercy to Mike Huckabee, the Arkansas governor who later runs for president. After managing to win his freedom, Clemmons moves to Washington state and becomes both predator and prey, dealing drugs while dreaming of wealth through a variety of fantastical enterprises. He believes Donald Trump will make him rich. That he can game the Bank of America. That a self-proclaimed prophet in New York City holds the key to prosperity. Clemmons descends into madness, while making plans of striking back at the people he blames for his lost youth and uncertain future.

The Other Side of Mercy A Killer Journey Across the American Divide eBook Jonathan Martin Ken Armstrong

I may be biased as I know personally one of the authors and know what a tremendous writer he is. He, with the help of his co-writer, took a relatively mundane tale of a sociopathic, psychopathic killer and took it beyond that realm into an inditement of the criminal justice system, the social system and all that this entails to a insightful commentary of all that is wrong with our American society. While both remaining sometimes too objective about their subject, they managed to convey the premise that evil is allowed to exist in our society, without boundaries, because of the malaise and political correctness of this current social order. I thought the writing was superb, the research formidable, and the resulting narration a completely tremendous read with much food for thought. This book should be a mandatory read for anyone directly or indirectly concerned with our criminal justice system. It is an age-old tale of good vs evil with evil being allowed to exist much too long and much too easily before finally being recognized and defeated. Bravo, bravo!!!

The Other Side of Mercy A Killer Journey Across the American Divide eBook Jonathan Martin Ken Armstrong Reviews

First of all, I pray that all the families involved find healing from this situation. This book was an interesting piece from beginning to the end. Being from Arkansas, made me familiar with a lot of the parties involved and the way that the authors detailed the storyline with real inserts, made the book more amazing to read! This reading could bring awareness and make one good movie.
Well this was my sister who was killed by this man on November 29, 2009 and it is really bothers me that they felt they needed to write a book & make money off her death. My life is forever changed without her. Most people will never know what it is like to lose something so precious to you in that manner. I get to live with this for the rest of my life. While others feel they need to read this & can move on. My nighmares don’t stop. I had to rate this to post my comment but I felt it necessary for someone to hear from a family members point of view.
Since these events happened in my area, it was of special interest to me. It's very well written, detailed and a book I could hardly put down.
If it had been more facts and less opinion, would have been much better.
I bought this product to honour the fallen police who died that horrible day in November 2009. This book throughly tells the life story of Maurice Clemmons fairly and many of the systematic failures of the American criminal justice system. The Other Side of Mercy is also the last nail in the coffin of the political career of Mike Huckabee.

But one thing I really liked about this book is this book tried to protray the Lakewood Four as extraordinary yes, but human beings as well. We need to remember that cops are people and they're stepping up to the mark to defend our community from those who'd destroy it.
Tough book to read at times. I bought this for a school project and this was the best price I found. It arrived in perfect condition.
The day of the murder of the Lakewood Police Department officer's is still very fresh in my mind. I remember wondering what would cause a human being to do what this obviously insane person did. While all my questions might not have been answered, it showed insight into how our justice system sometimes gets it very wrong and in the end a tragedy of this proportion happens.
